The Single Most Important Word For Entrepreneurs

For the past few years now, Andrea and I have been building Engraving Amore from the ground up.  We have done extensive research and testing, designed some fun and unique products, spoken to vendors and customers, sweated about financial decisions, learned what we could about the legal and accounting side, the list goes on and on.  I have learned so much, and I look forward to learning more.  There is one thing, however, that I have learned above all else.  There is a single word that you need to know and use, regularly and with enthusiasm, when you are creating a business from the ground up.  I believe that it is the most important word for any business owner, whether it is a small business of two or three employees, or if they are the CEO of a major company.  It is the word that opens doors.  That word is "yes".

How I Learned The True Power of Yes

Our First Sale

The real value of the word yes came to me last week.  From Engraving Amore's very first sale (over a year ago), Andrea has noticed my desire to tell a customer, "Yes, we can do that."  And, frankly, she's even laughed at me about it on occasion.  But, whatever it was, we did it, even if it was the first time we did it.  Last week, we had another situation come up. A friend and fellow businessman we met this past fall, a woodworker, unfortunately had a fire in his shop.  His equipment and inventory were ruined.  He called us on Sunday about an order the customer was supposed to have by Friday.

"Yes, Marcy, We Got You Covered"

Our Doors Are Open!

Well, here it is.  October first.  Do you know what that means?

Engraving Amore's online storefront is officially open for business!

We've been doing a lot.  And I mean A LOT!  Learning.  Designing.  Brainstorming.  And ENGRAVING!

It's no small task opening your own business.  We've learned more in the past two years than we ever saw coming!  But what fun it has been!

And now that our online store is here, it really is only the beginning for us.  We have so many ideas that we could keep ourselves busy for years just doing what we have in mind now.  That doesn't even include the fun projects we hope you bring to us.

Something Never Seen Before

What are we happier to work on than anything else?

Something new.

Something customized.

Something never seen before.

Of everything we've made, and all that we will continue to make for our customers and family, the things that bring us the most joy are those that are truly unique, made from conversations we've shared with the gift giver. What makes someone special? What are their hobbies? Who are they really? These are the questions we love to ask. Using this information, we'll work with you to create something new. Something that reflects the recipient in a way an off-the-shelf gift just can't do. Something never seen before. This is about the ones we love. Don't they deserve it?

These questions led us to creating the double heart plaque, a beautiful piece of wood commissioned by one of our customers for his anniversary. His wife had never seen anything like it before because it never existed before

So, What Is It You Actually DO?

Yesterday, we went to a holiday party.  Yes, the last one of the season, as far as I know.  One of the first people I ran into was Aunt Jo-Ann, who is one of the many supporters of our business.  But Aunt Jo-Ann had a very important question.  She has been following our Facebook posts and blogs (I'm sure she's reading this one right now, actually), but there is one question that stood out in her mind.  She asked me, "So, what it is you sell?  What is it you actually DO?"  She wanted to see our actual product on, not just a "coming soon" page.  Between all of the blog entries and pictures of one-time projects, maybe we haven't been very clear to you what it is we're actually going to be doing here.  Maybe we should address that!

On a Mission

So, who really cares about a mission statement?   Does anyone actually read them?  Who writes such pointless fodder which just takes up space on paper?  That’s what I used to think, until it hit me.   Mission Statements are the very soul of a good company!  Every important decision, every interaction, whether it be between business owner and customer, or employee to employee, every product, every innovation should all be reflective of the soul upon which the company was founded.  As Jerry and I work to form our new company, we anticipate with excitement a vision which defines how we will conduct business, and it is merely an extension of the people we have always been and always hope to be.

Advice From An Expert On LIFE!

If you had the chance to ask an “Expert on Life” for advice, what would you ask them?  I am lucky enough to have had that chance.

I’ve read that it takes 10,000 hour of doing something to become an expert at it.  I’m not sure if that’s 100% accurate or not, but it’ll work for the sake of this blog.  Anyway, if you calculate that out, 10,000 hours equals 250 weeks of working a 40 hour per week job.  That means you can become an expert at your job in five years while still taking two weeks per year for vacation.  Not bad, huh?

Let’s put that into perspective.  If you answer the phone for a customer service job, you will have mastered all you need to handle standard and even rare issues.  Sounds pretty accurate, accepting a bit of flexibility for product changes, new technology, etc.  If you fix computer systems, you can definitely master it and become an expert in five years.  But what about just plain living?

And So It Begins...

Time flies when starting your own business
It's been a while!  For more than a year now, Andrea and I have been thinking, talking, planning and learning.  When I looked over the last blog entries here, I couldn't believe how long ago they were written!  But that's okay!

Life takes many turns.  I wrote a few articles previously on work-life balance and how to fit starting a new business into a busy life.  Some of the past year for us has been about work/life balance and ranking the "life" portion higher.  But our business idea has never been too far on the back burner.  As most readers know, when entering any new field, there is always a lot to learn.
Opening your own company requires you to wear many hats!
In our case, we are entering many new fields... artistic design, marketing, sales, accounting and of course laser engraver operator, just to name a few! But the life experience, energy and outright excitement that we bring to our fledgling idea help us at every turn.  We have not been focusing on the blogging part of our business as the highest priority, but going forward, we will try to write here when we can, especially when we have major events.  This is one way we can keep our friends and family updated on what we are doing and also spread the word as our business grows!  Thanks for your patience, and we hope you subscribe to our blog below.

Today is a big day for us. I've read that about 560,000 new businesses are started every month (here's where I read it).  It is a truly staggering number!  Well, today we joined that statistic!  Engraving Amore LLC has been legally formed!  Where we go from here is really an unknown.  Oh, sure, we have  our ideas, plans and dreams, but who knows what the future really holds for us?  Which direction this new venture will go?  All we do know is that we will work to make this new idea a reality.  OUR reality.  And this small, even minuscule, business has potential. Lots of it.  And as we grow, we'll let you know where we are (literally and figuratively!).  And when you want to celebrate those special moments and people in your life, we will be here to help.
